There is something magical that happens when women come together and create. The energy is just incredible and the experience is something to cherish and revel in!
The DivaNation PHILLY Fall Concert Event - "All Women, All Jazz" - was presented to a full, SOLD OUT house this past Friday September 15th at the The Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz, and the evening was indeed magical.
Jazz guitarist Monnette Sudler and her all female Ladies Night Out band backed five amazing DivaNation vocalists - Miss Haley Joyner, Gretchen Elise, Khadijah Renee, Sherry Wilson Butler and Carol Harris. Repertoire included original composition and original lyrics to McCoy Tyner’s Contemplation by Gretchen Elise, original lyrics by Carol Harris to Horace Silver’s Nica’s Dream, and songs that highlight women composers, lyricists, and themes of the divine feminine in jazz. Sherry Wilson Butler’s Nina Simone tribute brought down the house, as did 14-year old Haley Joyner’s heart-rendering delivery of Summertime. Khadijah Renee’s dramatic delivery of Hold It Right There by Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, replete with luggage props, was a rousing success. The evening highlighted the outstanding talent we have in our Philadelphia Jazz community.
Monnette and her band including musicians: Camille Thurman, Tenor Sax; Noriko Kamo, Piano; Kim Clarke, Bass; and Lucianna Padmore, Drums presented a fantastic second set full of high energy, outstanding musicianship and original compositions by Monnette Sudler.
The DivaNation Divas - talented, smart, & dynamic all - are dedicated to enhancing the presence of the feminine spirit in the genre of jazz music. Stay tuned.
